Thousands of Toyota vehicles are shipped from Japan to markets around the world every month — and a huge share of them arrive with a stereo that refuses to turn on properly. Instead of your music, you see a small screen asking for a code. This guide explains exactly why that happens and how to perform a proper radio code unlock in a few minutes, without removing the radio or visiting a dealer.

Why imported Toyota radios lock in the first place

Japanese-market Toyota head units — the NSZT-W68T, NSZT-Y68T, NSZN-Z68T, NSCN-W68 and NSLN-W68 families — carry an anti-theft system known as the ERC (Easy Register Code) lock. The system watches the power supply: whenever the unit loses 12-volt power completely, it assumes the radio has been pulled from the car by a thief and engages the lock.

During the journey from a Japanese auction house to your driveway, that power loss happens by design: batteries are disconnected for transport safety, customs inspections, compliance work and showroom preparation. So the very process of importing the car guarantees the radio will ask for a code on first use.

What you need: the 16-digit ERC serial

The lock cannot be bypassed — but it can be solved, because every lock screen can reveal the unit's 16-digit serial number. With the radio powered on:

Opening the ERC service screen

  1. Turn the head unit on. It will show the lock or code prompt.
  2. Press and hold the main power button.
  3. While holding it, switch the parking lights on and off three to four times.
  4. Release. The display switches to a service screen showing the 16-character serial (characters 0–9 and A–F) and the exact model name, e.g. NSZT-W68T.

If the combination above doesn't work on your unit, don't force anything — different 68-series units respond to slight variations. Our serial retrieval guide covers the alternatives with photos.

Generating the 8-digit unlock code

The 8-digit code is not stored anywhere in the car — it is calculated directly from the serial. That's why a dealer asks for the serial rather than the VIN, and it's why an online ERC code calculator can produce the identical result:

  1. Open the Toyota ERC code generator.
  2. Enter the 16-digit serial exactly as shown.
  3. Select your head unit model.
  4. Receive your 8-digit code on screen and enter it on the radio.

Units in the 68 family accept the code immediately — no waiting period, no attempt counter tricks, no removal required.

If the code doesn't work

Double-check the serial first — a misread character (0 vs O, 8 vs B) is the most common cause. If the serial is correct and the code is still rejected, contact support with a photo of the service screen; genuine services verify the calculation against your exact unit before you spend anything.
